Shawna Fletcher

Expertise: project management, ideation and dreaming, fundraising, start-ups, evaluation

Shawna Fletcher has worked for over a decade as an administrator at Arizona State University to promote engineering and the applied sciences to women and underrepresented students. Over the years, she has designed and implemented recruitment and retention programs, as well as workshops and events, that encourage students to explore careers in engineering. Shawna’s leadership in robotics programs includes the National Underwater Robotics Challenge (NURC) www.h2orobots.org and her role as President for the Arizona Promoters of Applied Science in Education (APASE) http://apaseplace.org/default.aspx, a local nonprofit. In 2007-2008, Shawna co-conducted a state-wide assessment project to evaluate over 80 FIRST Robotics teams in Arizona. She holds Bachelor of Science Degrees in Microbiology and Physiological Psychology with a minor in Women’s Studies. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Bioengineering and will graduate in 2009.

In addition to her interest in science and engineering, Shawna is a local teacher and freelance cellist. She received training from several world-renowned cellists: Winifred Mayes, Gordon Epperson and Samuel Mayes. Her musical accomplishments comprise 25 years of symphonic playing experience with the Mesa Symphony, Flagstaff Symphony and the Symphony of the West Valley; performances with several local quartet groups - Musica Nova, Desert Chamber Musicians and the Four Seasons Orchestra; adjudication for the 2003 Phoenix Symphony Guild Concerto Competition for young musicians and participation as section member in the Red Rocks Music Festival in Sedona under the direction of world-renowned violinist, Schlomo Mintz.

Shawna’s work as a consultant and project manager includes the Women in Applied Science and Engineering (WISE) Program www.fulton.asu.edu/fulton/departments/cedar/wise.php; the Mayo Center for Humanities in Medicine The Doctor Will See You Now production; and the ASU Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Partnership Program, ArtVentures in Engineering.

Shawna currently serves as President of Carey Home Inspection Service, Inc. (www.careyinspection.com), a small business corporation with her husband, works full-time for Arizona State University, teaches private cello from her home and is mother to a terrific eight-year-old boy. She also has two dogs, Sunny and Bear (A.K.A. “money” and “hair”) and enjoys SCUBA diving and travel.
